Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) seems to be everywhere these days. For the past four years I’ve had the pleasure of working with Oakland Unified School District as they adopt the Caring School Community program and embrace SEL. Oakland sees SEL as central to their move towards Full Service Community Schools and the Common Core State Standards.
Edutopia just created a short video describing the following five SEL skills and competencies:
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making
These competencies have a direct impact on students-in their confidence, their sense of community, and their ability to function in various learning environments. Where do you think you and your students are strongest? Where is there room for growth? I’d love to hear your reflections below.
And if you are interested in SEL like we are, please check out a few CSC lessons to see how we develop these competencies. I’d love to hear your comments about them.
