Belmont-Cragin Elementary School, Chicago, IL

"We were wondering how could we have a skills-based curriculum that would help children self-manage and self-monitor as well as really help to improve the climate and culture of the school. Caring School Community has helped us to transform what we do at Belmont-Cragin. We’ve opened up the door of professional learning with our teachers. The resources that were provided by the Center for the Collaborative Classroom afforded us the opportunity to transform our school from being a school where social-emotional learning is practiced to embedding social-emotional learning into everything we do. When you walk into Belmont-Cragin, you definitely experience a caring school community." — Stacy Stewart, Principal

Futures Elementary School, Oakland Unified School District, Oakland, CA

We decided to implement CSC in our school because, simply put, our students need it. We need to build a sense of community both schoolwide and within classrooms. Our student population needs the skills to be part of a caring community, so we decided to implement a program that would help them with this. Social skills are often lacking with many of our students, so we wanted to put a program in place that would help with this deficit.

Oakland Unified School District, Oakland, CA

Oakland Unified School District and Developmental Studies Center (DSC) have partnered on the Caring School Community Oakland Initiative since 2009. The Initiative is both a catalyst and an opportunity for inquiry into the explicit teaching and learning of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and competencies and the integration of SEL in the academic and social life of students and adults.
