Based on several assessments, we determined that our second–through fourth-grade students were struggling with phonics skills. 35–45% of the second-graders ended their year significantly below grade level in reading. The SIPPS program is a daily intervention of 40 minutes for all of our K–3 students. Our “SIPPSters” Team of impact teachers and kinder instructional assistants also provide SIPPS instruction, so student groups are reduced by the support of part-time personnel. In addition, 4th and 5th grade students have received support after school and during school with SIPPS Plus intervention combined with guided reading.
