Michigan’s Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) has approved Every Child Ready for use in the Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), Michigan’s free PreK program for eligible four-year-olds, and the state’s Great Start to Quality program.

Collaborative Literacy — Comprehensive Literacy Instruction (K–5)
Tier 1 Early Literacy Program Eligible for Section 35m Funding
The Michigan Department of Education’s Committee for Literacy Achievement (CLA) identified Collaborative Literacy as meeting its criteria for high-quality Tier 1 early literacy instructional materials, making the program eligible for Section 35m funding.
Collaborative Literacy is a comprehensive K–5 curriculum that brings together Being a Reader and Being a Writer to develop skilled, confident readers and writers. Together, the programs create meaningful connections between reading and writing, build knowledge and literacy skills, support positive classroom communities, and help teachers strengthen their instructional practice.

The Reading League has published a Curriculum Navigation Report on Collaborative Literacy as an informational tool for curriculum decision makers. Visit The Reading League Compass to access the report.

Hear from Michigan Leaders About Why They Chose Collaborative Literacy

Hear from Jan Douglas of Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Keturah Godfrey of Southgate Community Schools, Brenda Said-Wright of Great Lakes Educational Group, and Amber Kowatch of Manistee Area Public Schools.
Being a Reader
Grounded in scientific reading research, Being a Reader follows a continuum of reading development to meet each student at their instructional point of need and take them to their next level of literacy through whole-class, small-group, and individualized approaches.

Being a Writer
Being a Writer is a comprehensive, research-based writing curriculum that emphasizes the writing process, encourages student choice and voice, and fosters a supportive community of writers. Through genre-based units, students develop skills in narrative, informative, and opinion writing while learning to collaborate, reflect, and revise.

Aligned with SIPPS (Tier II and Tier III Intervention) for a Multi-Tiered System of Support
Thanks to an aligned scope and sequence, common routines, and similar lesson structure, students can move between the two programs seamlessly.
SIPPS is:
- Highly supportive of educators, easy to implement, and well-suited to tutoring and expanded learning settings
- Aligned with the science of reading
- Proven effective with young readers (K–3), older readers (4–12), multilingual learners, and students identified with dyslexia
- Flexible, adaptable, differentiated, and MTSS-aligned for use across all tiers of instruction

It feels good knowing that I am covering all of the standards for kindergarten that we have in this program and I do not see gaps in the material or learning. It also leaves room to differentiate instruction depending on the individual levels of my students.
– Alexia Mathews, Kindergarten Teacher, Huntington Elementary school, Riverview, Michigan

Our students have grown tremendously in their reading and individual reading skills, with some students passing our statewide assessment after completing SIPPS Challenge.
– Lisa Olmstead, TOSA, Grades 3–8 Reading Intervention, WINN SIPPS Program, Saint Paul Public Schools
