Caring School Community

Caring School Community, First Edition

This page is about the first edition of the Caring School Community program. Visit here to read about the newly-revised, second edition.

Caring School Community (CSC) is a nationally-recognized, evidence-based program for grades K–6 that builds classroom and schoolwide community while developing students’ social and emotional (SEL) skills and competencies.

CSC strengthens students’ connectedness to school, an important element for increasing academic motivation and achievement and for reducing violence and delinquency.

Class Meetings, a cross-age buddies program, Homeside Activities, and Schoolwide Community-Building Activities help students develop respect for each other and take ownership for their learning and behavior. Download the first eight weeks of Class Meetings for grades K–1 or grades 2–6 to see how CSC can help you

  • build relationships among students
  • directly teach social skills
  • address problematic playground behaviors
  • set classroom norms, and more.

Nationally Recognized Evidence-Based Program

Coming Fall 2018!

A second, completely revised edition of Caring School Community will be available fall, 2018! Learn more about How the program supports building students’ sense of community while fostering their social and emotional development.

Caring School Community is a rigorously evaluated SEL program. Two federally-funded evaluations of the Caring School Community program—one in St. Louis, MO and the other in San Francisco, CA—found that creating a strong sense of community increases students’ academic performance. One of these same studies also shows that CSC improves student behavior.

Specific research on DSC’s Child Development Project (CDP), the precursor to CSC, showed that the program had a significant impact. Visit our resources to read more about the research results of the program.

Both CSC and CDP have attained recognition nationwide. The U.S. Department of Education highlighted the Caring School Community program’s research base and effectiveness. CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) includes the program in the guide Effective Social and Emotional Learning Programs: Preschool and Elementary Edition.
