ALAMEDA, California — August 3, 2021 — Center for the Collaborative Classroom has partnered with Javelin Learning to create Collaborative Coach, a personalized, video-based, asynchronous coaching platform that pairs a teacher with an instructional coach who provides curriculum-specific coaching.

Collaborative Coach gives districts a powerful yet cost-effective way to provide coaching to an increasing number of teachers without diluting quality and impact.

Registration for the inaugural Fall 2021 Collaborative Coach cohort is now open. At this time, Collaborative Coach is available to educators who are teaching SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words).

A Scalable Solution for Bringing Effective Coaching to More Teachers

Research has shown that coaching is an important tool to support teachers. Findings from a recent meta-analysis on teacher coaching found that instructional coaching improves both instructional practice and student achievement—more so than other professional development and school-based interventions.

However, the same researchers also found that the “effectiveness of the coaching program declines as the number of teachers involved increases.” The challenges of bringing on, training, and supporting coaches can be very expensive and difficult to manage. Schools and districts need a scalable way to get coaching to more teachers and grow its impact while maintaining the coaching’s effectiveness.

Collaborative Coach’s personalized, asynchronous platform makes instructional coaching possible for more teachers than traditional coaching, while also providing a model for learning that is flexible, adaptable, and affordable.

Educators and Coaches on Collaborative Coach

“My experience with Collaborative Coach pushed me to be even more conscious of my instructional practices as I supported my struggling readers. … The feedback and guidance was motivating for me. The more feedback I received, the more I dug into the [SIPPS] program materials, the more I was able to generate questions and identify things that I wanted to learn more about. The very specific feedback from the coach offered me things that I could chew on and helped me think about my instruction and the student experience.” –Tamara Williams, Reading Interventionist

“The Collaborative Coach process was amazing. I think the value of recording yourself and framing growth and reflection around personal observations is the best development in which a professional can engage. I can hear my own voice and my coach’s voice from my reflection video each day I work with my groups. I am accountable to myself and therefore my readers in a deeper manner than before. My coach’s swift response made it feel like she was right beside me.” –Kendra Fagg, Reading Specialist

“As a Collaborative Coach, I noticed teachers being more reflective about their practice. I thought they went deeper into the curriculum than in other coaching experiences. It was truly powerful to watch teachers build their knowledge in an uninterrupted way. Intentionally viewing the teacher-created video provides me the opportunity to coach the teacher in a personalized way that can guide, support, or encourage aspects of their instruction to best meet their learning needs.” —Gina Fugnitto, Collaborative Coach
