Being a Reader for Grade 1 is comprised of whole-class and small-group reading instruction. Whole-class instruction includes read-alouds and shared reading, vocabulary, independent work, handwriting, and social development, and it is designed to be used in coordination with Small-Group Reading Sets 3–8.

The Being a Writer scope and sequence provides a detailed outline of the program’s development of writing skills and strategies, including process, craft, organization, grammar and conventions across grade 1. Students also receive direct instruction in writing about reading, genre-specific writing skills, vocabulary, and research skills.
