Tell us a little about yourself, your school and district, and the students that you serve.
I’ve been in the Springfield Public School District for 20 years. I’m proud to serve in a district that deeply values early learning and the foundational years of education. Walsh Elementary School is a vibrant, nurturing place where we focus on building strong relationships with our students and families. Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and each individual brings something unique and special to this Pre-K–Grade 5 learning community. It’s a joy to watch them grow, explore, and develop confidence in themselves as learners and future citizens.
What is the most rewarding part of being an educator for you? What do you especially enjoy about your current role?
The most rewarding part of being an educator is seeing the spark in a child’s eyes when they realize they can do something they once thought was too hard. I love being part of those “aha” moments. In my current role, I especially enjoy supporting teachers and helping them feel empowered in their practice. When educators feel confident and supported, it ripples out to the students in powerful ways.
SEEDS allows the educator to meet the students at their level. A tier system gives the educator the ability to ensure learning for all students. This builds confidence in our little learners and allows them to grow and strive for excellence.
What do you appreciate about SEEDS? What do teachers appreciate about it?
I appreciate SEEDS because it meets students where they are. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach—it’s responsive, intentional, and grounded in real relationships. Our teachers have shared how much they value the tiered system SEEDS provides. One teacher said, “SEEDS allows the educator to meet the students at their level. A tier system gives the educator the ability to ensure learning for all students. This builds confidence in our little learners and allows them to grow and strive for excellence.” Another added, “I am a strong supporter of ‘Sign-In’ and I know my students enjoy the one-on-one attention and progress they feel each day!”
What have you noticed about students’ learning and engagement? What have teachers noticed?
We’ve seen a noticeable increase in student engagement and connection. Students are more connected to their teachers, their peers, their learning, and their environment. One teacher shared, “Our students are proud of themselves when they understand a topic or accomplish a task they have been practicing. The SEEDS model is affirming and builds confidence in our little learners. SEEDS incorporates a safe learning environment.” That sense of pride and ownership is something we celebrate every day.
How has SEEDS shifted teaching practices and/or professional learning in your school/district?
SEEDS has provided our educators with meaningful resources that inspire new ideas and build confidence in their ability to support all learners. One teacher reflected, “SEEDS has given us additional resources to support our students. These resources provoke ideas and confidence in our ability to help our little learners succeed!” It’s not just about tools—it’s about mindset. SEEDS has helped us reframe how we approach early learning and professional growth.
It’s more than a program—it’s a philosophy that centers on relationships, equity, and intentional teaching of evidence-based practices using the five Early Literacy Predictors.
What thoughts or insights would you share with a school or district that is considering SEEDS?
If you’re considering SEEDS, I would say: do it! It’s more than a program—it’s a philosophy that centers on relationships, equity, and intentional teaching of evidence-based practices using the five Early Literacy Predictors. SEEDS empowers educators to be supported, responsive, and reflective, and it creates a learning environment where every child feels seen, supported, and capable. The impact on both students and teachers is real and lasting.
