SIPPS Plus & Challenge

Age-Appropriate, Accelerative Intervention for Older Readers

SIPPS is an evidence-based program used to support new and striving readers in grades K–12. The SIPPS Plus & Challenge components are designed to work together to support older readers who have lingering gaps in foundational skills or an underdeveloped ability to decode and understand polysyllabic words, getting them back on track and giving them new confidence as readers

Backed by third-party studies and nationally recognized, the SIPPS program:

  • Aligns with the science of reading
  • Provides explicit instruction in phonological awareness, spelling-sounds (phonics), and high-frequency words
  • Utilizes placement assessments to group students by need and mastery tests to ensure they achieve 80% competency before moving on
  • Supports older readers with engaging, age-appropriate text
  • Provides independent practice with the game-based app, CC PAL
  • Comes with an AI Assistant to support teachers with implementation

How SIPPS Plus & Challenge Work

SIPPS Plus and Challenge work together to support older readers in grades 4–12 who have lingering gaps in foundational skills or an underdeveloped ability to decode and understand polysyllabic words.

SIPPS Plus provides age-appropriate foundational skills intervention for students in grades 4–12 who are reading at a first- or second-grade level. It addresses the simple alphabetic and spelling-pattern phases of foundational skills.

SIPPS Plus also comes with Dreams on Wheels, an anthology of short, decodable texts aligned with the lessons, on topics that appeal to the interests and content-reading demands of older students.

SIPPS Challenge Level addresses the polysyllabic/morphemic phase of decoding. Differentiated word lists make it easy to adapt each lesson for readers in elementary, middle, or high school.

SIPPS Aligns with KIPP’s Tier 1 Framework

  • Fishtank ELA (K-8). SIPPS provides the necessary accuracy and automaticity in decoding skills to ensure all students can access the rigor of the Fishtank core texts.
  • (DIBELS 8): SIPPS is proven to drive positive outcomes on this specific assessment; a quasi-experimental evaluation showed that SIPPS participants scored significantly higher on the DIBELS than comparison groups (effect size = +0.25).

SIPPS is Already in Use in KIPP Schools

Baltimore • Chicago • DC • Indianapolis

KIPP Schools are already using SIPPS in Indianapolis, Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., and the curriculum is growing across the network. Leaders are seeing strong results from SIPPS, with students making meaningful gains in foundational reading skills.

“I enjoy teaching SIPPS Plus because I get to see students grow and gain confidence through independent practice. It allows me to guide and coach individually rather than just lecture, which makes my role more interactive and meaningful. I also get clear insight into what students truly understand while helping them build independence.”
